Laser Technician II

Position Title: Laser Technician II
Department: Contract Manufacturing Services
Reports to: Production Supervisor

Position Summary

Set up, run and QC parts using laser systems assuring maximum safety, efficiency and conformance to customer specifications.

Primary Responsibilities

Program and operate equipment in Contract Manufacturing Services.  Specific responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Set-up beam delivery, laser and tooling.
  2. Write and optimize CNC and AutoCAD programs and nesting.
  3. Responsible for training and mentoring of other technicians and production workers.
  4. Direct production labor upon completion of equipment set-up/validation.
  5. Run and program various inspection equipment.
  6. Operate laser machinery to process materials/parts to meet customer specifications.
  7. Perform quality inspections of finished parts.
  8. Communicate technically with customers and vendors.
  9. Document changes to existing jobs (parameters, tooling, etc.) for future production runs.
  10. Perform test studies, documenting parameters, tooling and any additional information as assigned.
  11. Follow and assist in creating work instructions, as required per customer requirements.
  12. Perform necessary preventive maintenance.
  13. On-call technical support per on-call policy.
  14. Package and route parts to shipping and perform cleanup as required
  15. Complete required paperwork.
  16. Various other duties as directed by Supervisor.

Hiring Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required, two-year technical degree preferred, four-year degree desired.
  • 3-6 years experience in the laser industry.  Cross-trained in more than one segment of the business.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to select an appropriate laser and set up (i.e.: gas, optics feed rate, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of CNC programming and/or M and G-codes
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Computer skills i.e. Microsoft Office required, AutoCAD a plus.
  • Strong customer service skills and maintain a healthy working relationship with sales and engineering.
  • Strong math aptitude.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting of up to 40 pounds occurs sporadically throughout the day. 
  • Sitting and/or standing for long periods of time (2-4 hours before a rest or change). 
  • Rapid repetitive motions of the hands and wrists over 2-4 hour periods.  Repetitive back, wrist, arm, shoulder, pinching, elbow and finger movements occur continuously. 
  • Fork lift driving is also part of the job.
